Summary
Menstrual regulation was proposed to any woman seeking voluntary abortion within 6 weeks of the last period. It was performed as an outpatient without local anaesthesia or premedication.
From November 1984 to May 1989, 778 menstrual regulation abortions were performed. Acceptance of the procedure was good in 95 per cent of the patients. No immediate complications (laceration of the cervix. uterine perforation or haemorrhage requiring treatment) occurred. No ectopic pregnancies were observed. The overall efficacy rate was 95·6 per cent, only 4·4 per cent of pregnancies persisting.
Menstrual regulation is a simple, effective and economical method for the early termination of pregnancy.
