Summary
For over 15 years a consultant with interest in tubal surgery carried out tubal microsurgery in a district general hospital in addition to routine gynaecology work. The majority of the cases were referred. Women were counselled before surgery regarding the success and failure rates and risks of ectopic pregnancy. Microsurgery was performed on an average of two patients a week. Follow up was continued until 36 months after surgery. From the first 203 cases, 61 (30 per cent) pregnancies resulted. There were 41 live births including one set of twins. Analysis based on one successful pregnancy outcome per patient showed that there were 39 live births, a ‘take home baby rate’ of 19 per cent.
