Summary

The aim of this study was to determine the patient profile and possible aetiological factors of premature ovarian failure. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 224 women with secondary amenorrhoea who attended a gynaecological endocrine clinic at a tertiary care referral centre in India. Among 224 patients with secondary amenorrhoea, 47 were diagnosed as having premature ovarian failure. About 70 per cent of patients with premature ovarian failure were aged less than 30 years. The duration of ovarian activity was less than 1 year in 10.6 per cent of cases and more than 15 years in 14.8 per cent of cases. More than half the patients were infertile. None of the patients were found to have an abnormal karyotype. Ovarian biopsy was performed in 27.6 per cent of cases and none were found to have follicles. Suggestion of auto-immunity were present in 6.3 per cent of cases.

In patients with premature ovarian failure a varying period of ovarian activity occurs before the onset of secondary amenorrhoea. Family history and chromosomal abnormality are not significant associated factors. Ovarian biopsy should be avoided even in patients with premature ovarian failure who desired fertility. Detailed investigations to detect auto-immune disorders may be helpful. A lower age limit for diagnosing premature ovarian failure in India is suggested.
