Abstract
Knowledge of the various components of the breast-feeding process provides the basis for a professional nurse to furnish a mother with the breast-feeding knowledge and the emotional support that she needs to progress successfully through her pregnancy, her delivery, and her postpartum period. The breastfeeding components selected for explanation in this article were chosen because they are the ones most commonly discussed in the literature as being important to the overall well-being of the mother-infant dyad. The breastfeeding components selected include nipple care, psychophysiological aspects, positioning, timing, suckling, nutrition, components of breast milk, saving breast milk, leakage, weaning, and sexuality.
