Optical Coherence Tomography and Visual Field Patterns in Eyes with Anomalous Optic Discs and Acquired Optic Neuropathy

Abstract

The authors performed a comparative analysis of optical coherence tomography and perimetry for eyes with optic nerve head atrophy associated with anomalous appearing discs and eyes with disc atrophy from acquired optic neuropathy. Eyes with acquired optic neuropathy showed a more extensive visual field loss, despite a similar average retinal nerve fibre layer thickness. Temporal quadrant thinning occurred in the acquired optic neuropathy group and temporal quadrant preservation in eyes with anomalous discs. This study suggests that the mechanism and distribution of retinal nerve fibre layer thinning may affect the degree of visual field loss in persons with atrophic optic discs.
