Hematological risk factors for anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

Pages 197-203 | Accepted 06 Feb 1990, Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

In a group of 44 patients all over 50 years old with non arteritic and non post-cataract extraction anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperglycemia was detected in 45%, 16% and 39% of them, respectively. Hematic cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose concentrations were statistically increased when compared to controls. Modifications of hematocrit and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were much rarer, and no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups. The cup-disc ratio of the patients was significantly reduced with respect to the controls; moreover, the author obtained a significant negative correlation between the cup-disc ratio and serum cholesterol concentration, whereas no correlation whatsoever was observed between cup-disc ratio and serum triglyceride, blood glucose, hypertension and diabetes.
