Knowledge about pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period amongst Pedi Women

Pages 51-61 | Received 03 Mar 1986, Accepted 07 Nov 1986, Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Knowledge of events surrounding conception, pregnancy, birth and early infant care was explored by interviewing 171 Pedi women delivering in hospitals or clinics. Findings suggest that in general, knowledge about these events seems to be inadequate. In particular, knowledge about the timing of conception, the reasons underlying dietary and other behavioural practices during pregnancy, common obstetrical techniques and some facilitative breast feeding practices appears to be lacking.
