Benign intracranial hypertension:Follow-up of seven cases

Pages 171-174 | Accepted 03 Mar 1984, Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

The authors report seven cases of benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) including neuroradiological examinations and long-term follow-up. In two cases a contributing factor was identified: one pregnancy and one thrombophlebitis of the lateral sinus. Permanent ophthalmic sequelae were found in at least two cases. The authors conclude that BIH should not be considered really benign, at least as regards vision. They recommend the use of a lumbo-peritoneal shunt as soon as visual symptoms become apparent in the course of BIH.
