Abstract
The clinical features of 30 primary epithelial lacrimal gland tumors encountered during a 30-year-period are discussed. Fourteen patients (46.6%) had pleomorphic adenomas, twelve (40%) had adenoid cystic carcinoma, two (6.7%) had pleomorphic adenocarcinoma and two (6.7%) had mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Patients with malignant tumors usually had a short history of a few months with pain while pleomorphic adenoma cases had a longer history without pain. Pleomorphic adenomas generally caused enlargement of bone but there was bone erosion in two cases. Malignant tumors were radiologically normal or there was bone expansion or destructive changes. Chronic dacryoadenitis was found to closely masquerade both the benign and malignant lacrimal gland tumors. An en bloc excisional biopsy is necessary in pleomorphic adenomas while an extraperiosteal approach should not be used in malignant tumors.
