Abstract
Comparison of the birth weights of 1088 children with cleft lip and palate with those of an unselected material of the same population from the same period showed that in the anomalous group the birth weights were definitely sub-average and the relative number of prematures (≤ 2500 g) distinctly higher. The differences were statistically highly significant. Birth weight seemed to be correlated with the severity of the anomaly, possibly also with its mechanism of production.
