Abstract

Reduction of the size of the tongue in muscular macroglossia may be recommended, in selected cases, on orthodontic, phoniatric, and psychological indications. Thorough preoperative investigation based on the cooperation of the specialists involved is presupposed. It is conceivable that further experience will extend the indications for surgery, and thus essentially simplify the orthodontic treatment of open bite in association with maoroglossia. In certain cases, tongue reduction should create possibilities for the spontaneous correction of certain malocclusions and speech defects. A material of seven patients is reviewed.
