Abstract

The present paper describes a model for analysis of exudation, cell migration and granulation tissue formation in experimentally induced, aseptic inflammation. The method involves the use of subcutaneously implanted, perforated cylinders of Teflon®. Four cylinders were implanted in each of 100 rats under aseptic conditions and were removed at 12 hours, 4, 7, 14 and 21 days. The amount of exudate accumulated in the chamber cavity was measured and the cell content of the exudate analysed. Furthermore the morphology of the tissue surrounding the chamber and proliferating into the chamber cavity was described. Particular attention was paid to the vascular system of this tissue using techniques of microangiography and vascular labelling. The course of the inflammatory process throughout the experimental period is discussed in relation to exudation, inflammatory cell migration and granulation tissue formation.
