Abstract
Local topical application of 70% DMSO to standardized thermal trauma of the dog's paw reduced oedema formation. This effect was not due to suppression of the increased microvascular permeability following the trauma but could be explained by a combined effect of an increase in drainage of interstitial fluid via the lymphatics and an increase in evaporative water loss from the burn surface. Oral administration of DMSO to rats with scalds of the tail did not reduce the inflammatory response or the healing time.
