The Diagnostic Potential of Surface Recorded Electrocochleography

Pages 7-13 | Published online: 12 Oct 2009

Abstract

technique of recording auditory evoked potentials from the cochlear nerve and brainstem nuclei is described. The technique would appear to be of diagnostic importance as information about the function of the auditory system, from the cochlea to the inferior colliculus, can be obtained from the recordings.

Examples are given of the responses obtained from normally hearing subjects, and from patients with neurological or neuro-otological conditions. The preliminary results indicate that the method could have a useful role as an early indicator of certain disorders, and as a diagnostic aid which complements the existing audiological test procedures.
