Discrimination of Fricatives by Hearing Impaired Children Using A Vibrotactile Cue

Pages 14-18 | Published online: 12 Oct 2009

Abstract

An experiment was carried out to determine whether a vibrotactile cue would help profoundly hearing-impaired children discriminate fricative sounds. Ten profoundly hearing-impaired boys were tested under two conditions: (1) audition supplemented by lipreading, and (2) audition and lipreading supplemented by the vibrotactile cue. Speech reception was superior when a tactile cue was provided.
