Abstract

This special year in the history of the Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology is coming to an end. In the very first issue, published 40 years ago under the name Acta Rheumatologica Scandinavica, the Editor, Professor Gunnar Edstrom, stated in his Preface: “It is to be hoped that ACTA RHEUMATOLOGICA SCANDINAVICA will still further reinforce the inter-Scandinavian co-operation in the field of rheumatological research” (1). This has been a main goal for the Journal ever since, and has been extended over the years to the entire international society of rheumatology.

Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden together constitute the Scandinavian Society for Rheumatology (2). In Lillehammer in 1994 the Editorial Board decided to mark the 40th Anniversary with a scientific award of NOK20000 to five young rheumatologists, one from each of the Scandinavian countries. Each society has selected an award winner and given a brief presentation of its candidate.

The Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology congratulates the five winners. Every one of them is certainly worthy of the grant and of the honor of being chosen among a large number of highly qualified candidates.

Basic as well as clinical rheumatology research in Scandinavia is presently expanding. This is a necessity in order to cope with the rapid scientific development in the field. The Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology hopes to continue to be a significant incentive to future research and development in Scandinavian as well as in international rheumatology.
