Abstract

The scientific basis for the use of titanium and its alloys in implant surgery is reviewed, including the structural metallurgy, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The clinical applications are discussed in relation to orthopaedic, oral, plastic and reconstructive and cardiovascular surgery.
