Evaluation of lung ventilators

Pages 133-140 | Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

The evaluation of lung ventilators is being undertaken/or the UK Departments of Health within the Welsh National School of Medicine. The technical performance and safety assessments are being made within the Department of Anaesthetics and the clinical trials within the South Glamorgan Area Health Authority.

A recent issue of‘Health Equipment Information’ (HE!) No. 119, published in December 1983, contains evaluation information of five machines. These are the Blease Manley MP3, BOC Manley Pulmovent MPP, BOC Manley Servovent MS, Penlon Oxford Mk II and the East Eastox.

The Draft British Standard 5369, “Breathing Machines for Medical Use”, revised in July 1982, has been used as the basis of the technical evaluation. It is emphasized that this standard is still in draft form, and manufacturers are under no obligation to meet its requirements.
