Abstract
Following the success of balloon angioplasty as a non-operative technique for the recanalization of stenosed arteries, particularly those of the heart itself, work is being carried out to determine whether it would be possible to use laser radiation for this purpose. Both Nd:YAG and argon radiation have been shown to be capable of destroying antheromatous plaque, the major problem in vivo being perforation of the artery wall. The technique shows promise but much experimental work remains to be done.
