Abstract
A fast-moving hemoglobin variant with a mobility between Hb A and Hb H was detected on cellulose acetate electrophoresis at pH 8.6 in blood from a donor at the Beijing Friendship Hospital. Structural analysis demonstrated that the 16th residue, lysine, of its α-chain is substituted by asparagines. The variant has not previously been reported in the literature. It has been named Hb Beijing, after the district where it was first found, and is expressed a α16 (A14) Lys→Asn.
