Abstract
Hemoglobin Iwata was discovered in Japan in 1980 (1). Recently, we detected a slow-moving α-chain variant by cellulose acetate electrophoresis (2) in a family of the Han ethnic group during a survey carried out among students in Huhehot, Inner Mongolia. Structural analyses of the abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) demonstrated that it was Hb Iwata [α87 (F8) His→Arg]. This is the first example of this variant to be found in China.
