What do Stereoisomers of Antidepressant Drugs Indicate About the Topography of the Serotonin Uptake Area?

Pages 91-94 | Published online: 12 Jul 2009

Abstract

Some antidepressant drugs are stereoisomers that have been tested for their effects on serotonin uptake. A three-dimensional analysis of the molecular structure of such drugs has led to a topographical model for the putative serotonin uptake area. This area may consist of four binding sites located on at least three planes, and containing a channel through which serotonin enters the cell. The model may be tested by determining the effects of the enantiomers of citalopram and fluoxetine on serotonin uptake.
