Abstract
A rating scale (the GBS scale) for measuring dementia syndrome has been developed. The scale gives a quantitative measure of mental impairment, a dementia profile and measures changes over time.
It is divided into four subscales measuring impairment of motor functioning, impairment of the intellectual and emotional capacities and mental symptoms common in dementia. The reliability and validity of the scale is acceptable.
Four diagnostic groups of patients have been rated to test the diagnostic value of the GBS scale: normally aged patients, patients with dementia of Alzheimer type (AD/SDAT), old patients with somatic and mental disorders cared for in long somatic stay wards and chronic schizophrenics. It is shown that the four diagnostic groups all had different dementia profiles which may be of diagnostic value.
