Abstract
Dahl A. A. Bruk av pasientregistre i psykiatrisk forskning i Norge - muligheter, begrensninger og etiske problemer.
The Norwegian Central Register for Severe Mental Disorders was recently closed by the government after 72 years of registration. The difficulties in maintaining confidentiality and the misuse of such registers were the political reasons for the closure. A review is given of the assets and problems of the psychiatric case register as an instrument for research and mental health care planning. Data registration procedures and classification are discussed, and research strategies and ethical conflicts in register research are presented.
