In this study concerning 335 child and adolescent psychiatric inpatients in two counties, a little more than 25% suffered from affective disorders. The majority were between 16 and 18 years of age. Patients with bipolar affective disorders differed from patients with depressive disorders in relation to family background and psychosocial stressors. A symptom check-list (Cederblad-Höök) validated the diagnoses made from hospital records. Depressed patients had symptoms such as sleep disturbance, depressed mood, withdrawal and low self-esteem. Patients with affective bipolar disorder had symptoms such as hyperactivity, high sexual activity and elevated mood. Patients with bipolar disorders had pharmacological treatment to a greater extent than depressed patients and other child psychiatric patients. Depressed patients with a long inpatient treatment and with earlier inpatient treatment had a better outcome.
