Abstract
A patient developed severe myoclonus when treated with a combination of clomipramine, tryptophan, and electroconvulsive therapy. During the past 10 years there have been several reports on the “serotonin syndrome” as a complication when patients are treated with especially MAOIs or 5-HT-reuptake inhibitors in combination with tryptophan. It is important to recognize the syndrome, as we get more potent and specific 5-HT-reuptake inhibitors and especially as fatal outcome has been reported. The treatment seems to be immediate discontinuation of the medication.
