Structural Features of PIG IgA

Pages 157-173 | Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Pig IgA from colostrum and milk is composed of two molecular types - a 9.5S and a 11.6S molecule. The 9.5S IgA molecule comprises approximately 60% of the total IgA and does not possess secretory component. The 11.6S IgA molecule does possess secretory component and is the equivalent of secretory IgA occurring in the mucous secretions of other mammalian species. Free secretory component in the pig has a sedimentation value of 4.3S and a suggested molecular weight of 80,000 - 90,000, and is covalently attached to the parent molecule. Antigenic homology with human IgA has been shown for both the 11.6S and the 9.5S IgA molecules and the carbohydrate content of pig secretory IgA is very similar to that of its human counterpart.
