Abstract

Liposomes have played a pivotal role in our efforts to improve drug action in therapeutics. Thanks to the input of an ever increasing number of individuals with diverse interests and from a variety of backgrounds, the system has evolved laterally from a powerful tool for the study of cell membrane biophysics to life saving constructs. Its odyssey, from initial enthusiasm, through milestones of ideas and concepts, alternating troughs of optimism and pessimism and predictable bouts of assaults or applause, continues, but Ithaka is no longer ellusive. My contribution to “Nostalgia” will, as the title(l) above suggests, deal with early events in the voyage.
