Mechanisms of Liposome Formation

Pages 431-441 | Published online: 28 Sep 2008

Abstract

The exact mechanism of liposome formation is still not well understood. When starting from lipid-in-water suspensions there are predominantly two different mechanisms of vesicle formation: fragmentation of bilayers with subsequent self-closure of bilayered fragments and budding off daughter vesicles from mother liposomes. The two mechanisms are qualitatively discussed and related to particular vesicle preparation methods. The article is concluded with a speculative unifying mechanism and discussion on liposome stability.
