The International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology and its President

, &

It is not possible to capture Professor Andrea Riccardo Genazzani in a few paragraphs or even in a few volumes. However, we aim to tribute on his 70th birthday by offering a view of the scope of this outstanding physician-scientist. Neither the subjects that are described in this volume nor the friends who contributed to it have escaped his attention and scientific probing! The two subjects that are missing in this volume are neurosteroids and menopause, both of which are “his,” and just the references to his work would have tested our page limits. Andrea will continue to be “Il Maestro” in these areas.

The choice of contributors also presented a problem, and any hurt feelings should be directed at the three of us. In making this a surprise, we certainly left out a large number of people with whom Andrea has interacted and befriended over the years. There are enough good friends to fill the next tribute, and the next.

These papers only address one facet of this remarkable man. There are many others. As a child during Europe’s terrible times, he was taken in by family friends. This charity has never left him, and we see it constantly in all of his works. We all enjoyed collaborating with him for the great success of the International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology (ISGE) and the International Menopause Society. He has chaired these two scientific societies with a great talent, becoming famous worldwide in our field. The ISGE remains his beloved creature. After more than a quarter of a century, our Society has raised to international respect and recognition with multifaceted activities that reach thousands of physicians and scientists all over the world everyday, thus setting the bar of excellence. This was made possible by Andrea’s incessant efforts and contagious enthusiasm.

Many gynecologists had the opportunity to meet Andrea and to enjoy his smile and his incredible sense of humanity. This brilliant speaker was awarded by countless scientific societies and universities. A long list of students and residents who recognized his amazing quality in teaching and stimulated the passion for obstetrics and gynecology might follow, but it is too long to be added. A smaller number of lucky individuals had the unique experience to share with him a significant part of their working life. He has certainly left a bit of his style in all those who, in one way or another, crossed his path.

This oeuvre speaks the respect and honor with which we hold Andrea. But, more importantly, this makes public our affection and very best wishes for him on this milestone. May we all join together for the next 10 years celebration.
