INTRODUCTION

The First European Conference on Sex Steroids and Metabolism took place in Esbjerg, Denmark on 18-20 May 1989. The First Conference discussed topics in epidemiology, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and hemostasis in relation to cardiovascular diseases in women using combined oral contraceptives. Epidemiological data indicate an association between oral contraceptive use and the development of cardiovascular diseases. Plasma lipids, carbohydrate metabolism and components of hemostasis are influenced by female sex steroids, as indicated by changes during pregnancy and the menstrual cycle and differences between eugonadal and hypogonadal women of comparable age.
