Pharmacological treatments for personality disorders

Pages 303-309 | Published online: 16 Sep 2011

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic review of clinical trials of drugs for patients with personality disorders. Almost all trials have concerned the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Research yields some evidence for symptomatic improvement with antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics. However, drug treatment does not produce remission of BPD. Routine prescription of these agents for these patients is not evidence-based.
