Ethical Implications of the New Genetics for Psychiatry

&
Pages 315-320 | Published online: 11 Jul 2009

Abstract

There has been little open debate about ethical problems associated with recent developments in psychiatric genetics. A symposium was held recently at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, to discuss some of these. Diagnostic uncertainty, the influence of social factors and stigma were identified as being particularly relevant to the genetics of mental illness. The implications of these factors for future clinical practice and research are discussed.
