Social networks and social support among older people and implications for emotional well-being and psychiatric morbidity

Pages 41-58 | Published online: 11 Jul 2009

Abstract

Strong evidence appears to exist of a relationship between social support and health. Unfortunately few investigators have used comparable or sophisticated concepts and measurements of social network and social support. Well-conducted longitudinal studies are essential for research in these areas. Most of the longitudinal research has been conducted in the USA and Scandinavia. Well-designed longitudinal studies, with adequate baseline measures, need to be commissioned in European countries.
