Abstract
Old age psychiatry is recognized as a specialty. However, half of the medical schools in the UK still do not have a senior academic in old age psychiatry, and there are inconsistencies in what is taught to medical students. Many groups (both medical and non-medical) require education in the aims and methods of the practice of old age psychiatry, and in multi-disciplinary working. Attitudes towards the elderly in general, and old age psychiatry in particular, are discussed. Planning and audit of these educational activities is required.
