Abstract
The physiotherapist or physical therapist's role in the care of the patient with pulmonary disease has its origins in Great Britain. Subsequent practices and studies regarding efficacy have been published by therapists throughout the world. The evolution of pulmonary care and the physical therapist's role and contribution in the United States is one that at times parallels but also contributes to the advancement of care provided in other countries. This paper will trace the origins and progress in the United States, including the recognition of the first certified clinical specialists in Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy.
