The use of volunteer counsellors in helping problem drinkers: Community work in action?

Pages 301-310 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Given the shortage of professionals who are willing - and trained- to help problem drinkers, it is important to consider alternatives. This paper examines the arguments in favour of using volunteer counsellors, and also discusses the reasons for not using community based primary level workers such as GPs, social workers or health visitors. The English National scheme for training volunteers to work with problem drinkers is outlined as are a number of issues for professional workers relating to the use of volunteers.
