Managing change in mental health services: Lessons from implementation

Pages 295-304 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

Changes in mental health services will only shift power from professionals to users if the radical nature of this change is appreciated. New relationships with other organisations will be built by managers who are empowered and creative leaders. Service changes need ‘product champions’. The organisational culture will change, dismantling defence mechanisms as well as introducing positive values of empowerment, problem solving, task clarity and strategic direction. In implementing such changes three critical elements are identified as financial planning, planning for people and establishing effective information systems. Managers now need to become effective leaders, establishing frameworks which facilitate development, fostering the organisation's capacity to change and investing in innovation.
