Organic Solvents and Aerosols: An Overview of Abuse and Dependence

Abstract

The use of organic solvents, particularly by way of inhalation, continues to be significant with medical and psychiatric sequelae. While the age of introduction and most common users of these agents are adolescents, users may be found at any age. Organic solvents can be obtained from a variety of sources and have widespread toxic effects, transient and permanent, in many organ systems of the body. Of importance is that many users of organic solvents are also users of and are addicted to multiple drugs and alcohol. Any suspected user should be thoroughly evaluated for medical and psychiatric complications of addiction to and dependence on organic solvents.
