Abstract
Nineteen patients diagnosed with DSM-III-R Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) were treated with imipramine in an open label study- Eleven of the 19 patients also had Secondary Major Depression. After treatment with imipramine (mean dose, 192 mg/day) for an average of 7.6 weeks, 75% of the patients had moderate or much improvement in their OCD symptoms. Patients with Major Depression required a longer period of treatment before improvement and as a group showed a poorer response to treatment. These findings are in accordance with two previous studies reporting the effectiveness of imipramine in OCD and contradict two others which did not find it to be effective. The authors discuss these conflicting results in light of their findings.
