Obituary for Sanford Weinberg (1950–2011)

Sanford “Sandy” Weinberg, age 61, of Sandy Springs, GA died on October 8, 2011. Sandy was born in Newark, NJ on the 14th June 1950, and grew up in Livingston, NJ.

Sandy was the well respected Editor-in-Chief of the journal Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs, published by Informa Healthcare, and will be greatly missed. His achievements include more than 15 books and numerous publications, most notably on FDA Regulatory Affairs.

In 1972, he graduated with a BA in Political Science from Dickinson College’, he then completed an MA from the University of North Carolina the following year, a PhD in Communication Research from the University of Michigan in 1975 and Post Doctoral Studies in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida in 1976.

From 1976 to present, he served as a regulatory and computer validation consultant to biomedical, pharmaceutical, medical device, and biotechnology industries and governments worldwide. He held Associate Professorships at Drexel University and St. Joseph’s University. Sandy served as President of Weinberg, Spelton & Sax, Inc. (formerly Weinberg Associates, Inc.) from 1986 to 1996, where he developed FDA standards that many companies use today. He was Vice President, Entrepreneur-in Residence, and Professor of Entrepreneurship, Muhlenberg College, and Director of the Institute of Entrepreneurship from 1993 to 2006. He was the Senior Director of BioDefense, GE Healthcare from 2003 to 2006, and the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance with Tikyah Therapeutics, Inc. from 2006 to 2008.

An Eagle Scout, Sandy was a Life Member of the Boy Scouts of America; a member of the Order of the Arrow, and in 1993 he received the Silver Beaver Award. He served on the Executive Board of the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America as well as the Atlanta Area Council’s safety & security committee. He also taught Wilderness First Aid. On the national level, he served on the International Committee and the Jewish Committee on Scouting, taught international courses at BSA’s National Training Center at the Philmont Scout Ranch and he attended several national and international jamborees.

As well as Editor of Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs, Sandy currently worked as Associate Professor of Health Care Management and Executive Director, Center for Clinical Studies and Regulation, Clayton State University.
