Abstract
This is the first in a series of articles to be presented in this Journal on basic statistical concepts which are applicable to the clinical process. We will start with vocabulary and definitions, and gradually advance to concepts of experimental design and interpretations of various statistical analyses common to clinical trials. These articles are based, in part, on material presented in greater detail in the book, Pharmaceutical Statistics, by the author (1). Every effort will be made in this series to avoid jargon and technical detail, so that those who are not mathematically sophisticated will be able to obtain some insight into statistical thinking.
