Abstract
Intraerythrocyte sodium and potassium concentrations and net flux rates of sodium from and potassium into sodium loaded, potassium depleted erythrocytes were measured in 76 normotensive volunteers, 12 male and 64 female. Nineteen of the women were studied before and after ovulation, four were studied at the same time intervals in a non-ovulatory menstrual cycle, and 41 during pregnancy (11, 14 and 16 in first, second and third trimesters respectively).
There were no significant differences in intra-cellular electrolyte concentrations amongst any of the groups. Net flux rates of both sodium and potassium were significantly lower in female than in male subjects, but there were no significant variations within the female population related to cyclical hormonal changes or to pregnancy. This may represent the result of an in-vivo androgenic effect on cell transport mechanisms
