Effects of Stroma-Free Hemoglobin and Polyhemoglobin on Complement Activation, Blood Cells and Coagulation Factors in Rats

Abstract

Poskitt et al reported that stroma of red cell membrane induced complement activation in vitro (1). On the other hand, Wilson and Thomas (2) thought that it was hemoglobin and not the stroma which causes complement activation via the alternative pathway. Infusion of stroma-free Hb resulted in complement activation in dogs but not in other species (3). The objectives of this research are to evaluate the effects of Hb and polyHb on complement activation.
