Abstract
In the last decade O2 transporting blood substitutes like perfluorocarbons, Fluosol DA 20% (F), and modified stromafree hemoglobin solution (SFH-nhpa; SFH) have received increasing attention.
F and SFH were compared with dextran (D) for their suitability as blood substitutes in hemorrhagic shock and their potential to restore adequate (blood and tissue) oxygenation. Circulatory parameters, blood gases, acid base balance and morphology were also evaluated. Survival time was the discriminating parameter of primary interest.
