Use and Accidental Exposure to Hallucinogenic Agents Reported to the Czech Toxicological Information Centre From 1995 to 2008

Abstract

Intoxication by hallucinogenic agents is relatively common in the Czech Republic, with most cases of the use of these agents being by adolescents and young people. The objective of the study was to evaluate the number, trends, gender and age of the subjects, and the severity of exposure in intoxication by hallucinogenic plant and mushroom substances, in comparison with synthetic drugs, brought to the attention of the Toxicological Information Centre (TIC) through inquiries over the past 14 years (1995–2008) (from total 3,702 calls concerning the use of both natural and synthetic drugs, 917 calls were due to the use of hallucinogenic plants and mushrooms).

Intoxication par des agents hallucinogènes est relativement commune dans le République tchèque, Avec la plupart des cas d'abus de ces agents étant des adolescents et des jeunes. L'objectif de l'étude était d'évaluer le nombre, les tendances, sexe et l'âge des sujets, la sévérité de l'exposition dans l'intoxication par les plantes hallucinogènes et substances champignons, en comparaison avec synthétique médicaments, portées à l'attention de l'toxicologiques Information Centre (TIC) au moyen d'enquêtes au cours des 14 dernières années (1995–2008) (à partir du total 3.702 appels concernant la violence des éléments naturels et synthétique médicaments, parmi lesquels 917 appels en raison de l'abus de plantes hallucinogènes et les champignons).

RESUMEN

Los abusos y la exposición accidental a agentes alucinógenos reportados al Centro de Información Toxicológica Checa desde 1995 hasta 2008

Intoxicación por agentes alucinógenos es relativamente común en la República Checa, Con la mayoría de los casos de abusos de estos agentes está por los adolescentes y los jóvenes. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el número, las tendencias, el sexo y edad de los sujetos, la gravedad de la exposición en la intoxicación por sustancias alucinógenas y por las plantas de setas, en comparación con las drogas sintéticas, que fueron notadas por el Centro de información de la toxicológica (TIC) a base de consultas en los últimos 14 años (1995–2008) (del total 3.702 llamadas relacionadas con el abuso de tanto naturales como sintéticas drogas, entre ellas 917 llamadas debido al abuso de plantas alucinógenas y hongos).

ABSTRAKT

Intoxikace halucinogenními látkami je v České republice poměrně běžná. Ve většině případů se přitom jedná o zneužití těchto látek dospívajícími a mladými lidmi.

Cílem studie bylo zhodnotit počty, trendy, pohlaví a věk osob, závažnost expozice při intoxikaci halucinogenními rostlinami a houbami, v porovnání se syntetickými drogami, které byly zaznamenány Toxikologickým informačním střediskem (TIS) (Praha, Česká republika), na základě dotazů, zodpovězených v průběhu posledních 14 letech (1995–2008) (z celkového počtu 3 702 hovorů týkajících se zneužívání přírodních i syntetický drog, bylo mezi nimi 917 hovorů týkajících se zneužívání halucinogenních rostlin a hub).

Karolina Mrazova, Mgr, is a Ph.D. student of Biomedicine Research at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Now she works in the Czech Toxicological Information Centre at the Department of Occupational Medicine, General University Hospital in Prague. She deals with answering questions about first aid and treatment of acute poisonings.

Tomas Navratil, Ing., Ph.D., is a research worker at J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of AS CR, v.v.i., Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, Czech Republic, and a Research specialist at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He deals with electrochemistry, first of all with voltammetry and polarography and with the application of statistical and mathematical methods in biochemistry.

Daniela Pelclova, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Head of the Department of Occupational Medicine with the Toxicological Information Centre for the Czech Republic, at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague. She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Association of Poison Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT).
