Use of Psychotropic Drugs in the Substance Abuse Setting

Abstract

Psychotropic drugs are increasingly being used in the substance abuse setting for two reasons. Cited research shows that more chemically dependent clients are also being diagnosed with a mental illness, and thus require psychotropic medications. The second reason is that psychotropic drugs are being tried as part of substance abuse treatment. Use of these medications engender several issues for substance abuse treatment staff.
