Abstract
The article stresses the particular obligations of those in the caring professions to act with conspicuous fairness both as employers and providers of service. The culture of long established systems with carefully guarded means of access may become overly self-regarding and exclusive. They may deny membership to the unfamiliar and fail to adapt to the needs of a developing multi-racial environment. Co-operation between professions should help to ensure the relevance of their services and avoid mutual reinforcing of exclusive practices. Professionals should use their combined authority and influence to protect the values which underpin their services and counterbalance any short-term political or organisational expediency which may disregard minority interests.
