The Role of Magnesium in Cystic Fibrosis—a Hypothesis

Pages 203-207 | Published online: 13 Jul 2009

Abstract

A short article is presented on the importance of magnesium and essential fatty acids (EFAs) in the management of cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis). The author proposes that both these nutritional factors are of extreme importance in the treatment of this disease, and outlines some of the reasons for this hypothesis. Although both magnesium and EFAs are of such vital importance in this disease, most physicians and specialists treating these patients seem to be almost completely unaware of their importance. This is especially true of magnesium. Whereas most physicians treating this disease do supplement their patients at least with linoleic acid, they do not prescribe some of the rarer, more important EFAs such as gamma linolenic acid, so essential in immunity.
