The Organophosphate Pesticides

Abstract

This article provides a brief historical background to the development of organophosphate (OP) pesticides, and details their chemical structures, synthesis and reactivity. Their toxic effect, through the blocking of acetylcholinesterase, is described, and symptoms of acute and chronic intoxication in humans are outlined. The problem of OP residues in food supplies is acknowledged.
